About the program:

The Department of Teacher Education and Professional Development (TEPD) aims to enhance understanding of international education, especially for people of color. We believe that stories about Black education in America are often limited and stereotyped. Our goal is to learn from successful teaching methods for multicultural and Latina k-12 learners in Costa Rica, with the intention of improving teaching pedagogies for Black k-12 learners in the United States. The visit to San Jose, Costa Rica will provide exposure to these diverse teaching and learning cultures.

Covid-19 Information

We are paying close attention to the CDC and WHO recommendations regarding COVID-19 and will adjust as necessary to ensure the health and well-being of all travelers.

We will follow all CDC guidelines and recommendations during the duration of the travel. Travelers may be asked to provide a negative PCR test within 24 hours of the departure flight. Travelers will be required to wear face masks when required and carry hand sanitizer with them when necessary throughout the duration of the trip. The majority of our activities on the trip are outdoors and we hope this will reduce the risk of any of our travelers contracting the virus. Temperature checks will be conducted as needed. Any traveler with an elevated temperature will receive a test for Covid-19. If the traveler tests positive, they will be required to quarantine for the remainder of the trip. A suite in a local medical facility with all necessary amenities will be provided.

Q: What if a student tests positive for Covid-19 while traveling?

A: We have a designated suite for quarantining in a local clinic. Any necessary treatments can be performed there. Meals would be provided.

Q: What if a student will miss the return flight home due to testing positive for Covid-19?

A: A familiar staff member from the local Spanish school will serve as a chaperone for the remainder of the student’s stay. Once the student is able to travel, they will be accompanied by the chaperone to the airport. Chaperoning for the return flight home will be determined on a case by case basis and will depend upon the comfort level and international traveling experience of the student. The student will be monitored at all times through our GPS dashboard.

Q: What if a chaperone tests positive for covid?

A: A familiar staff member from the local school will serve as a chaperone for the remainder of the trip. If necessary, another chaperone will travel to the country to assist with the remainder of the trip. This will be determined on a case by case basis and will depend upon the time remaining for the trip, the number of student travelers, and the total number of chaperones in attendance.
