The psychology study abroad trip to Guatemala was my first time ever traveling outside of the country and saying it changed my life would be an understatement. The trip by design is the perfect mix of a cultural, educational, and service oriented experience. Not only did this trip spark my passion for creating a positive impact within underserved communities, but my experience from this trip played a large role in my success in securing acceptance and funding for a competitive pre-doctorate clinical psychology program. The opportunities for engagement embedded within this program are unmatched; From learning a new language, providing free health screenings to communities with scarce access to healthcare, zip-lining over volcanoes, and eating A LOT of fresh authentic food, this trip offers an abundance of unique experiences (more than I can fit here). I truly believe studying abroad is a once in a lifetime experience and hope everyone has the opportunity and support needed to pursue it at some point during their college experience!

As part of an effort to expand my knowledge about health disparities around the world, I was opportune to travel to Guatemala. I received firsthand experience about the country’s health system by volunteering in clinics and conducting health screens that included checking blood pressure and blood glucose. Moreover, I assisted with in-home medical visits as well as an elementary school intervention. On a specific occasion as I entered one home I realized  there was no door to cover the entrance, only a thin blanket to separate them from the outside world. While I sat on a wooden bench, a baby was laid on my lap as a nurse administered a vaccine. The home visits allowed families at risk to acquire resources needed to raise their children. Serving overseas in a culture much different from my own opened my eyes. It was not until my feet were planted in that location that I began to have a better understanding of life. No Google search could have prepared me for what life is like across the globe.

Guatemala was the most impactful and life-changing experience. Having the ability to study in Guatemala expanded my horizons. Growing up in a single-parent household, we never traveled much, especially not out of the country. Guatemala changed me, it gave me insight into how other cultures live and their struggles. It opened my eyes to how the simplicity of life is the root of happiness , not being materialistic. Ever since this trip, I considered Guatemala my second home. I keep in touch with the first family I home stayed with and my teacher.

Guatemala, who knew that being 1,892 miles away and 4 hours and eighteen minutes by plane would do so much for my soul. I was just a college junior searching for a typical study abroad experience and more specifically, to travel and to learn. However, I walked away establishing my life’s purpose. From the moment we arrived in La Aurora International Airport, we were welcomed and so accepted by people who knew we did not originally belong. I took that as an omen that this trip was made to be successful.

Going to Guatemala was life-changing. The experience broadened my worldview & deepened my desire to work in healthcare. The amazing community in Guatemala and the thoughtful structure of the trip gave room for learning Spanish, working on my interpersonal skills, trying a bunch of new things, and having a great time overall. I loved every part of the trip & I can’t wait to go back!

The Psychology Department Study Abroad program in Guatemala helped to provide an hands-on experience for students who are interested in exploring various culture. Through this program, I was able to participate in various clinical activities that allowed me to understand the health disparities in other countries. I absolutely enjoyed the food that was provided by our host families.
